What Is Iyengar YOGA?

Iyengar Yoga is a dynamic approach to the practice of yoga.

With the precision and attention to detail that characterizes Iyengar Yoga, students at all levels can participate fully in classes.

Mr Iyengar's method of yoga makes it possible for everyone, regardless of age or physical condition, to enjoy its benefits.

His genius initiated the use of props in yoga, making it as beneficial for sports enthusiasts as it is for those with health challenges.

The Iyengar system of teaching is progressive.  Students are shown how to do the asanas (postures) step-by-step, and classes are designed so that students can advance methodically through each level, working at an appropriate pace.

Iyengar Yoga is not only asana practice, but is soundly based on the eight limBs (ashtanga) of the yoga of Patanjali:

  • I. Yama (ethical precePTS)
  • II. Niyama (personal observances)
  • III. Asana (postures)
  • IV. Pranayama (control and direction of the breath)
  • V. Pratyahara (sense withdrawal)
  • VI. Dharana (concentratioN)
  • VII. Dhyana (meditation)
  • VIII. Samadhi (state of bliss).
